All Eyes on Malawi - The Road to Hemp Legalization

On May 18, 2015, Boniface Kadzamira, an independent member of parliament, stood up in Malawi’s national assembly to make the case for the legalization of industrial hemp. “The whole house laughed at me. I was literally booed. They started saying that I’ve gone nuts,” said Kadzamira. “My family and friends weren’t happy either. They were asking, ‘Why are you, a God-fearing person, talking about chamba?’” he laughed, using the local term for cannabis. “Even my wife was saying, ‘I’m so ashamed. The neighbours are talking, saying you introduced this issue in the national assembly!’”. Read more...

Is Africa Set to Become the Next World Cannabis Powerhouse?

Is Africa set to be the next cannabis powerhouse? If cannabis were to be exported legally throughout the African content it could bring in as much as $79.8-billion (R983-billion) per year to the continent as a whole. Cannabis was introduced into Eastern Africa from Asia in the early 1500’s, where it rapidly dispersed across the content throughout the century. The Hemp plant became a cash crop under colonial regimes. The plant was outlawed across the continent in the 1920’s, mainly because of its psychoactive effects, however, the illegality of cannabis has never hindered the people of Africa from growing and consuming it.
